VPN server, NT4.0 sp6a , pentium 3 500mhz 256MB, running RAS and PPTP, also runs MSSQL7.0. SQL services used mainly during the day and VPN services used mainly at night, rarely are both services doing anything at the same time. Network is on a T1 with a cisco 2500 series router.
One user is using win2k with a T1 at his end (don?t know anything else about his network). When first setup everything worked fine, connection stable and fast. Over time the connection became unstable, will disconnect in the middle of a session for no apparent reason. Can reconnect and work for a little while then disconnects again. Has gotten to the point that he can’t use it at all. Server appears to be running fine, no unusual memory or cpu usage, nothing showing up in event logs, no problems with SQL….
So my first question is, any idea what?s going on or what I can monitor on the server to diagnose the situation?
Second user has win ME over a starband two way satellite. Satellite works fine with http or ftp connections, averaging about 800kBps on a good day. VPN connection BLAZES at about 8kBps.
So my second question is, any idea why VPN would be 100 times slower over a satellite connection and can anything be done about it?
