I have an HP computer with XP SP2, Intel 2.70 Ghz, 503 MB Ram
I have been concerned with loading time in IE 7.0. I signed up for Clearwire a month ago and at first I was getting considerably faster downloads. Someone on a forum suggested that I run a memory diagnostic test.
When I googled, I found a lot of suggestions about the “Ultimate Boot CD”
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Boy am I sorry that I ever considered this. Here are the rack of problems I experienced:
1) During a long download, I finally got an error message saying that it could not continue downloading in any folder with a space in it, re: Documents and Settings. So, I set up a separate C: UBCD folder.
2) I still got the error message about spaces, but there were no spaces. Meanwhile, I had a gazillion bytes in two different locations of files that were incomplete. So I tried to delete them in both places. And the horrorshow kicked up a notch.
3) I had no uninstall to use, so I tried deleting them to Recycle Bin. That worked partially but then some of the folders replicated themselves as “copy as” so I now had three folders of crap.
4) And my virus detection program started going crazy. I was informed that the following viruses were present in the download — from Downloads.com, of all places, which I have always trusted in the past:
? Application.tool.Wget.A
? Trojan.PWS.Ras.A
? Application.currprocess.C
? Keyfinder.exe
5) After two sweeps with antivirus, I finally unhooked the Trojan.PWS.Ras.A and Application.Currprocess.C
And checking with the http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
the site owner swears that the virus warnings are just “false positives” and the files are not really there. Well, yes they are. Still.
6) Meanwhile, I have managed to delete the files except for the folders
oem1
plugin
which are mega-packed with files and the files with the virus
So my question is:
1) Have any of you experienced the same problem with Mega Boot?
2) Is it a scam?
3) How in the hell do I get these remaining folders off my system
Thanks in advance
P.S. Oops. Is there a better memory diagostic tool or is there another solution to the problems I am trying to correct:
1) Slooooooooooooooooooww performance. 30 seconds or more for “save-as” boxes or “find” to appear
2) Over a minute to open Internet 7 at times
3) When I open a new tab in IE7, it sometimes takes over a minute for the tab to open to the site I want, with an interruption where (not responding) shows on the title bar
My specs are above.
Thanks
