Unable to connect to internet

I use a Netgear WG111v2 wireless connection, using Windows XP, when the connection IP is assigned by DHCP I connect to the internet without any problem. However if I enter an IP address manually I cannot connect to the internet although the status on the connection tab does state that I am connected and to all intents and purposes it appears that I am, but I am not…
