Unable to make changes to folders retrieved from server

by mbg1967 . Updated 16 years, 6 months ago

Windows 2003 Server crashed. Ran Robocopy and was able to retrieve all of the folders that were on there and move them to an external HDD (only thing I have with enough space) while the server gets rebuilt.

Problem: My users can access the folders they need via drive mapping from their PCs but are unable to write back to the same location after making changes to them.

Actions thus far:
1. Right clicked folder, selected “Properties” and it showed “Read Only” (dimmed), unchecked “Read Only” box and applied to all sub-folders and files, “Read Only” check re-appears the next time I look.

2. Right clicked folder, selected “Sharing and Security”, selected “Share This Folder”, clicked on “Permissions” and set permissions to “Change” for Everyone (Read was already selected here)

Is this a Permissions issue I need to remedy through AD or is it something I have to attack per file or folder?

Is this caused because the folders were once on a server and maybe the permissions that were applied there didn’t carry over onto the external HDD when the folders were moved?

TIA,

M
