Unable to sign into my MSN instant messenger

I have downloaded MSN instant messenger..I then tried to sign in so I could begin recieveing and sending messages and it fails to do this. It says something must be wrong with either my server or with .net..My server connection is fine..I can surf the web with no difficulty..I checked with .net and it says everthing is running okay..so what is the problem??
