UNIX on Windows XP

by rfox20004 . Updated 18 years, 10 months ago

Recently, I mindlessly forgot which computer I was on, and inadvertently entered some UNIX commands on a Windows XP machine. And to my utter shock when I realized I was in Windows, the Windows command console accepted and ran my UNIX commands!

I remember looking into the new Microsoft Powershell a couple of months ago, but I never installed anything (that I can remember). I certainly don’t recall installing anything else that might have set up a UNIX shell in Windows, but maybe I forgot.

Question is, how is this possible? Maybe I did install PowerShell? How can I check on it? What other programs might install a UNIX shell in Windows?

I want to know, not only to find out what happened, but I want to duplicate this on other Windows machines!
