Unknown File Types

by kcav . Updated 22 years, 8 months ago

I am running Windows 2000, 5.0 SP 4.

In Windows Explorer I selected folder %system%/system32/drivers, and sorted on Type. Nearly all the files in the Driver folder ended in sys, but there were exceptions. For instance, there is a file named gm.dls and one called gmreadme.txt. In gmreadme it said, the gm.dls file contains the Roland Sound Canvas Sound set.

I entered Start | Search | Folders & Files for *.dls. No other dls type files were found! Then I clicked on Tools, Options, File-Types, and looked for type dls. There is no dls file type listed in the directory of File Types.

How can a program use a file type that has not been defined? How can I find out what gm.dls does? Should it be deleted?

There is also a file eacpi2m.ecw. I right clicked on it, and clicked Properties. Its description said, Unknown application. There is no other ecw file on my machine, and there is no file type ecw listed under file types. What should I do with this file? Should I delete it?
