unreliable network connection

by agaskill . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

I have 3 Win98SE workstations connected to a Win2k server for file sharing, and they often lose their connection to the server. If they reboot they can connect again. The server reports no error.

What’s more, these workstations often “freeze” for a second or two where nothing happens and the cursor won’t move. Occasionally they’ll lock up entirely.

Wondering if it was a network problem, I ran a continuous ping from the server to each workstation. The first day I was losing about 5% ofmy pings to one computer and the others were fine. The next day I was losing about 5% to a different computer and the other two were fine. Today I’ve been losing pings to two of the computers, but less than 1%.

Every 10 pings or so, the problemclient’s response time, which is normally <10ms, jumps to 500ms or more. It doesn't correspond to delayed pings on the other client.
