Upgrading to a 40GB HDD

I have a Pentium II 300mhz PC running a 3GB HDD. I have just bought a 40GB HDD as a replacement and each time I try to boot up with my new drive, the 40 GB disc drive is not detected. Do I need to do something in my BIOS or CMOS to enable my PC todetect my new drive?
