Upgrading to XP

What do I do to upgrade my hp printer to XP.I have tried but haven’t suceeded.I have been told to download a driver and that didn’t work.I also have a one touch 8100 that has to be upgraded.Is there a way to recover a file I deleted not knowing it was needed for a program?The file is CDRTL.DLL.
