2 years ago, an experiment showed that when 20 USB thumb drives were scatetred in the street, 15 of them which were found were used by the finders. We all know that there is a huge security risk with malware being installed on the cute gadgets.
Recently, US Army has banned the use of USB drives after a worm that spreads by copying itself to thumb drives or other removable media infiltrated Army networks.
After some research on the subject, it seems there are actual risks in using these so popular flash drives which get cheaper, better faster smaller and with high storage capacity. That being said, most are really not safe. There are quite a few companies out there who offers these thumb drives with intresting security features attached such as centralized management consoles, encryption, and even remote termination (this thumb drive will self destroy in 5 seconds…:-) ).
So I wonder where are we standing right now? How many of us are secured? how many are at risk?
