USB modem incompatibility?

by darah.shawn . Updated 17 years, 5 months ago

Hello all, hoping I might find some resolution to an ongoing problem I’ve been dealing with for the past 5 months:

I am forced to use a USB modem for internet service (Pantech/UTStarcom UM175, if that matters any). The modem tends to work for a shot time, then behaves as if I have physically disconnected/reconnected. The only way to (temporarily) remedy it is to go through the motions of disconnect/reconnect. Once plugged back in, the cycle starts over.

I have checked for IRQ conflicts, PnP options in BIOS, and I have ensured that the USB Root Hubs aren’t turning devices off to save power. Device Manager never shows any errors with the modem. If I check out Event Viewer, there are a couple error messages that pop up right when the modem goes through its seizure. I’ll post them below.

I am running 64-bit XP, SP2 on this machine. If I take the modem to my laptop (32-bit Vista), I don’t seem to have the problem so I’m leaning towards an incompatibility with 64-bit XP. Alltel technical support is unwilling to lend me any assistance, and I need to find a way to correct the problem.

Anyone have suggestions?
