USB-parallel adapter for parallel type hardware lock

I use some 2003 version software that uses a hardware lock device (parallel port plug in). My company has upgraded laptops without the 25 pin serial/parallel interface. I purchased a USB-parallel adapter but the computer does not detect the hardware lock. What can I do?
