USB PORT STOPPED WORKING

I use an external mouse on my HP laptop and it just stopped working. If I plug in my MP3 player it will charge it but it will not recognize it. I have tried to dis-able and enable the ports and it has not made a difference. Can anyone give me some suggestions to try?
