USB port use causes crash!

I have a pentium II machine which has 2 USB slots on motherboard, they started showing errors and not responding to printers,scanners,or dig.camera. Showed error in hardware profile so reinstalled drivers. no joy. installed pci card with four usb slots, now when you plug device in comes up with oe error in vxd.? What can I do? please help. Thank you.
