USB problem with Scanner

Hi,

I have installed a HP5470 Scanner. I can use either USB or parallel so naturally I went for the USB.Big problems occur when using the USB. Windows 98 becomes unstable and takes two blue screens to shutdown. When trying to access the HP software, it takes a while for it to start only to say that it can’t find a scanner!
I changed it over to the parallel port and it works fine.
The problem is is that I would like to use the USB but do not know what the problem is. Does it have a problem with the scanner or is the USB port a problem? When running the initial install of the software, it tells me that I have support for Parallel and not USB.

Running Win 98 on a PIII500Mhz with 192MBRAM.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
