using two computers in-lind processing

I have a four year old Sony desktop that is the administrative comp for my network. It is great, but needs more speed/RAM. I don’t have a lot of money to spend and so I would like to ask if there is any way of using a (faster, better, newer) Sony laptop that is now un-needed to run in series with the desktop to bump up performance?
