vertical line on monitor

i have a sony vaio laptop(vgn-ar21m) which has suddenly developed a vertical blue line which just wont go away.my laptop has always been stationary on my table and there is no question of physical damage. my service centre which is far away advised me to replace the screen (over the phone)which costs a bomb.can it be rectified. i will be most grateful for advise.
