vga port dell inspiron 8500

I bought an exterior lcd acer monitor and plugged it to the VGA port on my Dell Inspiron 8500. I got nothing, I installed the Acer drivers and still nothing. I went through all of the actions in my control panel and still nothing. I am wondering if I need to make the VGA port active? By the way I have used the F8 key also.
