Vicious Malware – New and Destructive

by willcomp . Updated 17 years, 6 months ago

There is a new and destructive virus/worm/trojan which appeared about two weeks ago. It corrupts, overwrites, and moves .doc, .txt, .xls, and .jpg files. When a document is opened the contents are FileError_22001. So far, I haven’t found a name or description on any of the Security software web sites.

Bleeping Computer, McAfee Forum, and Experts Exchange have active threads on the problem. MalwareBytes AntiMalware removes the infection but damage is already done and files are difficult, if not impossible, to recover.

I posted this as a “heads up” and also as a request for more information if anyone has more details. I haven’t seen a PC with the malware yet, so am relying on information provided by others.
