Virtual server suggestions

I’m looking for suggestions as to an architecture for a virtual server. I’d ideally like to make it very simple (i.e. an external hard drive).

The essential role for this virtual server would be to serve as a file backup and also as a potential hub for a SQL database and/or Oracle spatial database.

Any suggestions? Has anyone been down this road and had some success?
