VIRUS SCAN

I have AVG for a virus program and never no problem. Now, when I try to open an existing Microsoft Word or Excel saved document a virus scan is enabled by who knows and it takes forever TO OPEN.
Is this an Office option? AVG has never done this in the past.mAYBE, AN UPDATE?
