Visio VB

Can anyone help? I have created a network diagram of the network I administer, I am trying to create some vb code that will enable an object on the diagram (example a server) to show either a green tick or a red cross depending if the server is live on the network. I think the way to do this is for the object (server) to ping the live server and depending on the response show a red cross or a green tick next to the object. please help!
