VOIP – SIP to IAX conversion?

I want to setup 2 asterisk servers connected by IAX trunk. There will be SIP ip phones/ devices attached to each server. So basically, the trunk is IAX and phones are using SIP protocol. Can asterisk server work under such sip/iax environment? Or all devices and trunk must be same protocol, either all sip or all iax?
