Volume status bar disappeared in my Dell M140 Laptop

Hello
I’ve been using my XPS M140 Dell Laptop for over a year when suddenly the volume status bar, which was displaying on my screen whenever I’d press the volume up\down buttons , had disappeared.
Is there a way to restore it? Why did it disappeared in the first place?
