VPN problems with Windows XP / Windows 2003?

*quick note all these computer are behind a Linksys Router. I’m trying to get this VPN thing down and started with the basics…..

I recently set up to allow incoming connections on my home computer Windows XP Pro. So I could dial in to the VPN. At first it didn’t work so I found out that you had to map ports 1723, 500 and 50, 51. Once I did that I could connect from anywhere to my home machine with no problems.

I recently set up Remote access to allow remote clients to come in on a Windows 2003 server. Started the service every thing ran great. I mapped the same ports 1723, 500, 50 and 51 and try to connect to the VPN from a remote machine no matter what it will not connect. It sits at “Verifying user name and password” and errors out on Error 628. So I gave up and tried to set it up on a friends windows XP machine allow incoming connections and map the ports just as my workstation at home. He uses the same router but I get the same error (as me trying to sign on the 2003 server)?! Any ideas why this is?? why mine works and the 2003 machine or my friends XP machine doesn’t work at all?!

Any help will be gladly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
