VxD program error

I had someone working on a Dell Inspiron windows 98 laptop come up with a blue screen error that said there was a problem with a recently installed VxD file. It mentioned increasing a value in a .ini file, but I didn’t want to change anything not knowing much about it. They were running programs like Office 2000, Autocad 14, and internet explorer 5.0. Can anyone help me out with what I should do to avoid these errors and why? Thanks very much!
