w2k upgrade problems

I just upgraded my computer from w98SE to w2k, I know about the driver issues and have gotten past that but these 2 issues have me confused. 1. When I go to start, programs, the tree opens up but it does not show all my programs although it takes up my entire screen, is there anything I can do to make the font smaller so I can see all my programs. 2. when I shut down I get the message “its safe to turn off your computer now” and it just stays there, I have to press the power button to shut down. how can I get back to the automatic shut down.
