Want to become IT manager

I have about 6+ years of Unix system administration and technical support experience. Even though I have 0 years of management exp I have learned so much about procedures of IT ops management and Technical support organization in general.
What does I need to lead a tech support team or IT ops team as a manager. Should i be looking for manager positions in the company i work as they know me and my work well or can i apply to different companies.

Please help
