What causes intermittent print line truncation

I am using an HP 6310 Officejet All-In-One. Several lines on each page have lower case characters which would normally extend below the print line (i.e g and j) cut off. HP was no help except to sell either tech support or a new printer. I have use the option of cleaning the cartrige several times with no resolution. I appreciate any advice.
