What exactly is "Fault Tolerance’?

From what I have been reading, it is the capability of functioning despite damage or malfunction. I am currently doing a project to design a fairly large-scale network, I am very new to this when I showed my instructor my layout he said it was missing “fault tolerance but Im not too sure what exactly it is.
