What if the CD-R and CD-RW on same contr

We are having problems with a CD burner (Sony) that quits burning after 2 to 8 seconds of data, then the system locks up. The CD-R and CD-RW are on the same controller(2). The hdd is on controller(1). Does it make a difference? Should the burnerbe on a controller by itself?
