What in blue blazes happened??!

Scenario: W2K backups from one workstation to the other (WinME). The reports lists the backups as successful and that the files were verified up to 3/15. However, the backup files from March 1st to the 15th have disappeared, and the last backup listed was on 2/28. The HD had been getting low on space (30 GB) due to the older backups not being deleted.

A tech from the retail store replaced the drive and installed Windows 2000 on a new one. I went to the office and installed the old drive as a slave to access the backup files and bring the database up-to-date at least to 3/15, but the 031502 file was gone. Question: When a backup job is sent to a HD from W2K to a target ME-controlled drive, will it force the backup to run and overwrite older files when the drive is low on space? I am suspecting that it was happened, since ME could not control the Write operation.

The actual story behind the lost data is that the software company called the client 3/18 and talked the client through an upgrade to a 32- bit trial version of the software. They had him run an integrity checker on the database (live data!) and entries were deleted that had been entered the previous week. Now the client has to reschedule his patients to next week and re-enter all the records that got deleted.

How can a file just disappear like that w/o human intervention?
