What is Bridging the network connection doing?

Ok this probably sounds like a stupid question but I created a bridge between my virtual server network connection and my actual lan connection on the computer. Now I have used nat and I have a good general idea of that. But what is the bridge doing? What does creating the bridge do exactly? Thanks anybody……
