What is the benifit cofiguring DNS serve

I recently joined a new comapny. In this company we have 2 DNS servers. One doamin. They configured DNS servers as different workgroup?. What is the purpose of doing this?. If I configured DNS in same domain what will happen. Please explain me in detail.
