What would be the best start for someone trying to enter IT field cheaply?

I have lots of experience with computer building and software. I read up and learn as much as I can about computers and networking. I have been unemployed for a while now, and am thinking of switching to IT. Unfortunately, I have used up most of my rainy day funds. I need to figure out best courses to take to get into field, and then take more afterwards to build up resume. What is the best? Take on a certification, then find work there, then add another? Or do you have to actually take on a full AA to start out? I really can’t afford that right now… Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Ed
