What’s stopping Norton from running?

Am trying to install & run Norton IS on a computer given to me by my brother. Hasn’t previously had *any* virus/adware/spyware protection and when inserting the Norton cd, the window pops up with three options, the first being to install Norton. Before I can even read the following options, the window has closed. Any ideas what’s causing this and how to get rid of it?
Reinstalling Windows xp not an option as don’t have the necessary stuff.
