I’ve seen many people coming into an IT organization I was working in. Some were new to the field, some were very experienced an then there was a mixture in between.
Some hit the ground running, some stood there waiting for instructions, and others seemed immediately disenchanted with the department.
The larger companies I worked for sometimes had a process to help guide the new individual into their role. While others had no formal process and left it up to the hiring manager.
Some of the “green beans”, as I call them, learned quickly and thrived in the organization, while some of the much more experienced people got frustrated and left the company or floundered and couldn’t quite make it in the organization even though they were very successful in other places.
To me this is an important issue and affects all of us. I was wondering if some of you could participate with your own experiences and what could have been done differently by management and/or the employee to make the transition successful.
