Where has my cd rom gone?

I have a normal cd rom (d) + a cd r/w (e). They were both working fine and then the normal one disappeared. It loads during startup in bios, but when windows loads, it is not in device manager. If I refresh in dm it appears, but still wont read disks. I am running xp pro on a pentium 2. Not sure how much this is worth!
