Which DVD burner type to go for?

With all of the competing standards (DVD-R, DVD-RAM,etc) which is the most common and is most likely to be the standard? I would like to pick the “VHS” of DVD burners and not the “betamax”. Any help/input would be great! Thanks. 🙂
