Which’s better 72000 or 54000rpm IDE HD?

i am planning to install a 40 G, Hard Drive which is 54000rpm. Will the performance of this Hard Drive will suffer because of this?, and What are the Revolutions per minute haave to do with the HD performance?. Will the speed of the transfer of date decrease due the 54000 rpm, will a 72000rpm make a better performance?
