Who owns the Internet?

Me and my friends has a smal grouod discussion on some technologies that has help the planet.

Our small group discussion stopped when I posted a question “Who owns the internet anyway?”

Well, it really puzzled me. There are many ISPs but are they subscribed to a bigger ISP? and if they are to whome does the BIG ISP subscribes?
