Why do I keep losing my internet connection on my wireless usb?

I recently purchased a sierra usb wireless aircard for my laptop. If I do not use it for 5 or 10 minutes , it loses its connection to the internet. Would I be better off with a card insert rather than the usb? Can I change the settings so my computer stays connected even after a few minutes of not using it.
