Wifi and the Internet

When in an open Wifi area, I generally receive a good and strong signal on my laptop but I am unable to establish an Internet connect with my browser. I assume I need to change some settings on teh browser but I have been unlicky in my attempts so far.
BTW, I have Wifi at home and I have a good connect as well as Internet access on my laptop.
Any help would be appreciated.
