win2k as a router

Hi,
Does win2k have poor performance when acting as a router, I recommended for my manager to divide some parts of our network with win2k router because our network is connected with all the switches to the central intel router, and whenever the intel router stops all the network stops.I recommended linking the different group of clients to the switch and the switch to the win2k router and the win2k router to the intel router, and this will remove the single point of failure on our current network.
Is that true?
