Win2K Moving disk to another computer

I tried to move by Win2K boot drive from a Pentium II 300 machine to an Athlon 750 machine. I was hoping with PNP the operating system would handle the new environment. However, though the boot process starts ok (Windows is starting up etc) when it’s about to switch to the graphic portion of the boot process I get the BSOD stating that “Boot device is inaccessible”. The system obviously can access the disk since it started to boot. Has anyone attempted/succeeded in doing what I’m attempting?
