We are an NT 4.0 shop with an NT domain and recently some people moved in and brought in their Win2k server (set up as a DC in their old shop) and Win2k Pro/WinXP Pro desktops. They need to access their Server to retrieve files and use our network to connect to the internet with their XP machines. Since they were only accessing files from their server, I figured I would just set up their machines on our domain and retain their exclusive access to their server. I have been able to add them to our domain but ran into a few odd problems.
First, one of the XP machines can see the server in Network Places but gets the following error “Server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.”
The second problem is with a Win2k Pro. machine. The administrator does not have access to Network and Dial-up connections (error: access denied). and I don’t have a Network Places icon anywhere on the machine. My guess is the old Admin. set some policy somewhere, but I have not been able to locate anything. I was able to get this machine on our NT domain and the XP machine mentioned earlier can access shared resources on this machine.
Here’s what I done so far to the Win2k Server:
Removed all DHCP settings and added to our NT domain.
Turned off DHCP Service and set to manual
Added PDC to LMHOSTS file.
Gone through all local user settings and even added new users to users on PDC.
Something else to note is I can only see some of the machines on Network places from the Win2k server but not all. Also logged on locally on all machines in question (have tried logging on to the domain but no joy).
Anyone have any idea what’s missing? Or maybe suggest a better way to do things.
