Win98 MSDE Standalone

I need to load MSDE on a stand alone Win98SE and have issues trying to get MSDE to recognize the login name. The only way I can add a database is to load it under sa but then when I try to access under the login name it gives a error of null user not in database. If I remove all users and just use windows family login I get same error. My workaround is to upgrade to Window2000Pro….Takes away from free use of MSDE.
Any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong? There must be a workaround.
