I’ve got a new quantum (maxtor) lct20 10GB Ultra ATA 100 HD I’m trying to install in an older K6 300 Wintech (crappy) machine. The mobo is running Award BIOS but can’t tell any more about it. The HD is detected fine by the BIOS and I use a Win98 floppy to load the CD and copy the Win98 directory to the HD (brand new formated w/ FAT32) but when setup runs the machine hangs right after scandisk when it says “copying files needed for windows setup.” I think this must be an issue relating to the older mobo not being able to handle ATA 100. The weird thing is that even with UDMA disabled in BIOS I get the same error. I’m not able to use an ATA cable due to the age of the motherboard. I’ve tried every other trick I can think of just for S&G, swapped memory, removed hardware all to no avail. I’m beginning to think that a PCI ATA controller card is my only choice. Any suggestions?
