Windows 2000 DC problems

We have been having a lot of issues with our primary domain controller and I think that there is something corrupted within it. I think that maybe the schema or global catalog or something might be messed up. I have a Windows 2003 member server on site and I would like to promote this one. How would I make this server the PDC without transferring any of the roles from the current PDC, because I’m afraid of corruption? Anybody have a good “safe” way to do this or do I have to transfer some of the roles?
